Drank own urine after earthquake: teen saved after nearly 100 hours

Date:

Chances of finding earthquake survivors under the rubble in Turkey and Syria are falling by the hour. A person can go without water for about 72 hours. Nevertheless, there was still cause for celebration for the tireless helpers afterwards. On Friday night, a 16-year-old woman was rescued alive in severely devastated Antakya in southern Turkey, more than 80 hours after Monday’s earthquake. A 17-year-old had to endure the rubble in Gaziantep even longer. After more than 90 hours he could be freed (see photo above)!

When 16-year-old Melda Adtas was rescued from the rubble, there was a huge cheer in the otherwise desperate city. 17-year-old Adnan Mohammed Korkut was also incredibly lucky: he was able to stay in the basement of a multi-storey collapsed house and draw attention to himself by shouting. According to Turkish media, he told his rescuers that he continued to drink his own urine and prayed a lot. To the applause of all present, Adnan was taken to an ambulance and then to a hospital.

The death toll rises to over 20,000
According to the civil protection agency Afad, the death toll from the earthquake on the Turkish side has now risen to 17,134. On the other side of the border in northern Syria, 3,317 people were killed on Thursday evening. The total death toll rose to 20,451. The rescue work has been hampered by the icy weather, which is also endangering the health of survivors who have to stay in makeshift shelters or even outdoors.

Meanwhile, international aid gained momentum. The World Bank promised Turkey 1.78 billion dollars (about 1.66 billion euros). The US, for its part, announced an initial aid package of $85 million for Turkey and Syria. It is now mainly about food, shelter and emergency medical aid. Aid deliveries are hampered by the destroyed infrastructure and adverse weather conditions. In Syria, there is also the difficult political situation: the disaster area in the civil war country is divided into government-controlled areas and areas controlled by anti-government and predominantly Islamist militias.

First aid shipment arrived in rebel-held Syrian territory
The first aid convoy since the earthquake arrived on Thursday in northwestern Syria, which is controlled by opposition fighters, a Syrian border official said. A correspondent for the AFP news agency saw six trucks, loaded with tents and toiletries, pass through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing. However, according to Syrian border official Masen Allusch, the goods were destined for Syria before the earthquake.
