The monument against National Socialism on Schwarzgrabenweg in Salzburg’s Leopoldskron district has been badly damaged again. A complaint has been lodged.
The police confirmed a report from ORF Salzburg on Saturday. On Thursday evening, previously unknown persons tore the metal statue from the stone plinth. Investigations are ongoing, a police spokeswoman said. The monument “Never Forget” was already demolished in March 2020.
In 2010, the Radiofabrik erected the memorial by Salzburg sculptor Zoltan Pap as part of an EU project to process a Nazi detention camp for Roma and Sinti in Salzburg-Maxglan. The 17 stumbling blocks around the monument were not damaged, police said.
City councilor Anna Schiester (BL) assured that the monument would soon be placed again by the city of Salzburg. By 2021 it had come into their possession. She called the renewed destruction “shameful”, also damaging the “memory of the victims of National Socialism”. “Our society should not tolerate this,” Schiester said.
