Miracle in Turkey – baby rescued from rubble after 128 hours

Date:

The death toll from the devastating earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border area has now risen to almost 25,000. It is feared that more victims will be found as the rescue work progresses. But miracles also happen. After more than five days, a two-month-old baby was pulled alive from under the rubble.

More than five days after the devastating earthquake, a two-month-old baby was pulled alive from the rubble in eastern Turkey’s Hatay province.

The child in the Mediterranean community of İskenderun was buried under rubble for 128 hours before being taken to a hospital, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu News Agency said on Saturday.

Although the actually critical 72-hour period for the rescue of buried people has long since closed, survivors are still being found under the rubble in the disaster area in the Turkish-Syrian border area – including small children and babies.

80,000 people injured
Meanwhile, the death toll from the earthquake continues to rise. Nearly 22,000 dead have been recovered in the affected areas of Turkey alone, Erdogan said Saturday afternoon. About 80,000 injured are being treated in hospitals, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said.

A total of nearly 93,000 people have been evacuated from earthquake zones in Turkey, according to authorities. More than 166,000 emergency services are involved in rescue and relief operations. Nearly 1,900 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake.

One million people homeless
More than 3,500 people have been killed in Syria. Many people are still missing under the rubble. According to Turkey, about 24.4 million people were affected by the earthquake. Vice President Oktay said more than a million people were homeless and housed in emergency shelters. “Our main goal is that they can return to normal life.”
