Last year, Tafel Österreich provided more than 35,000 people affected by poverty in 100 social institutions – for the first time with more than 1,000 tons of saved food.
2023 was probably one of the most turbulent years in its 25-year history: rising prices in all areas of life pushed many people who could previously barely make ends meet to reach their limits.
Thanks to a joint effort by 257 volunteers, despite the continued decline in the number of goods donations – and although around one million tonnes of food is still thrown away in Austria every year – by retailers, it was possible to rescue significantly more food from new sources such as agriculture.
Almost 16 percent more food saved
1,037,814 kilograms of edible food (plus 15.8 percent), including many fruits and vegetables, was saved and distributed free of charge to mother and child homes, homeless and refugee shelters, emergency shelters and women’s shelters, among others.
