A firefighter in Draustadt in Carinthia showed outstanding civic courage when she came to the aid of a chestnut seller.
A firefighter from FF Perau together with three comrades probably saved the life of a chestnut burner in Villach on Friday evening. “We had security at the Perchtenlauf and when we walked through the Christmas market afterwards, I saw a lifeless person in the Maronihütte,” says 28-year-old Anna Lesjak, who, unlike other passers-by, did not hesitate for a second and immediately came to the help from the man in a hurry.
suffered from CO poisoning
Together with comrade Oliver Kremser, who is currently training as a paramedic, as well as Horst Müller and Markus Ofner from the FF Gratschach/St. Andrä, they brought out Krzysztof Kopec, who was born in Poland and sells chestnuts in the lower church square. Then they set the rescue chain in motion. Kopec had suffered carbon monoxide poisoning because the cabin was not properly ventilated.
Kopec was able to leave the hospital quickly and on Saturday he was even back on the lower central square to roast his chestnuts. “I’m fine again,” says Kopec, who thanks the “crown” to his rescuers.
