Third degree burns – When heated: unconscious person seriously injured

Date:

Terrible accident today in Pöllau, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district: a 77-year-old, who was heating his boiler with paper and cardboard, fell down, remained dazed – and because the door of the boiler was open, burning material fell on his legs! The oldest suffered third-degree burns.

The man from the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district was alone today in his weekend house in Pöllau. Around 3:15 p.m., he fired up his solid fuel boiler in the basement with paper and cardboard. The man may have fallen on the tiles; the pensioner hit the ground with the back of his head.

At first he lay in a daze, which had terrible consequences. Because the boiler door was open, burning material fell directly on the legs of the person lying there! The man suffered third-degree injuries to his lower legs.

Nevertheless, he was lucky enough to regain consciousness, exit the heavily smoky boiler room, and call for help. The volunteer fire brigade of Pöllau rescued the man from the smoke-filled house, he was given first aid and then flown to the LKH Graz with the rescue helicopter Christophorus 16. There was no material damage caused by the incident.
