It is nothing new that the green city of Innsbruck is promoting cycling en masse. But now the Green Transport Councilor Uschi Schwarzl has probably crossed the line.
At a roundabout in Saggen, she had placed several bicycle racks in the middle of a sidewalk. Pedestrians – although not very numerous on a roundabout – were forced onto the roadway. Schilda says hello!
After violent protests from citizens and the ÖVP – Schwarzl spoke of “several constructive conversations with citizens” – the brackets must be dismantled again. “A triumph of reason over green ideology,” said VP-GR Mariella Lutz, Chair of the Transport Commission.
Answer with explanation
Schwarzl explains: “It was an attempt to use not only parking spaces, but also dead areas, such as this curb, for bicycle parking,” said Schwarzl. In fact, you could say there is a need for it. “There are a lot of bicycles on the sidewalk in this part of town, which are a nuisance to pedestrians.”
