This week a tragic incident took place in the Turkish parliament. A deputy of the Islamic opposition party Saadet suffered a heart attack during his speech. The 52-year-old died in hospital a few days later.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca informed the public about the MP’s death on Thursday. A Palestinian flag adorned Hasan Bitmez’s coffin during a memorial service at the parliament building.
Criticism of the AKP’s ‘cooperation’ with Israel
Bitmez was a strong critic of the Israeli government and during his last speech he also launched violent attacks on the government of Benjamin Netanyahu over the current military offensive against the radical Islamist Hamas.
Although Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling AKP party take similar positions, seeing Hamas as a “freedom fighter” and accusing Netanyahu of war crimes against Palestinian civilians, Bitmez described the AKP as a “collaborator” of the Israelis. The reason: Turkey still maintains economic relations with Israel.
“The wrath of Allah will not escape her.”
“Even if you escape the torments of history, you will not escape the wrath of Allah,” he said. “Greetings to all of you!” Immediately after these words, the opposition politician collapsed. Colleagues quickly rushed to his side and tried to revive him. But they couldn’t save him anymore.
