In May 2021, a man from Vienna wanted to hire a hitman for his then-girlfriend on the Darknet. But she was lucky because the website was a scam site.
A now 32-year-old wanted to find a murderer on the so-called Darknet who would kill his partner at the time on his behalf. But the fraudulent website thwarted his plan. Despite two payments by the 32-year-old, this order was not carried out.
FBI tipped off authorities
The US FBI, aware of these fraudulent sites, informed the Austrian authorities in the summer of 2022 that this website was being accessed from Austria.
The suspect was identified on February 9 through further investigation by the City Police Command in Favoriten, the Vienna Criminal Investigation Department and the Federal Criminal Investigation Department, C4-Cybercrime Competence Center. He was arrested on suspicion of complicity in attempted murder.
The 32-year-old confesses
The Viennese public prosecutor also ordered a search of the suspect’s house, during which investigators seized numerous data carriers. The 32-year-old confessed during his interrogation.
Fight against cybercrime
“This case shows once again that the fight against cybercrime has become increasingly important for the police. That is why, with the reform of the criminal investigation department, we are already strengthening this competence among the police officers in the regions. I would like to thank everyone involved for the dedicated investigations that led to the clarification of this matter,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
