Dangerous scenes took place on board a motor plane in Tyrol on Sunday: During a sightseeing flight, the pilot and his companion suddenly noticed a burning smell – shortly afterwards there was also smoke. It turned out that there was a problem with the landing gear. In the end, the 53-year-old pilot was able to land the plane safely after a preliminary check flight at Innsbruck Airport.
The local pilot and his companion (62) flew on Sunday afternoon with a private motor plane from Innsbruck to the Zugspitze and back. At around 4:50 p.m., the duo suddenly noticed a burning smell in the plane on the Mieminger Plateau. This was followed by a short smoke development.
Fuse blown
“The crew then determined that the landing gear fuse had blown. After alerting Austro Control and Innsbruck Airport, the machine’s landing gear was manually extended and Innsbruck Airport was flown over for a visual inspection of the landing gear,” the police said.
Airport is closed
In the end, the 53-year-old pilot was able to land the machine safely and without any problems. The occupants were unharmed. According to the current status, no major damage was caused to the aircraft. Innsbruck Airport had to be completely closed to the rest of air traffic from 4:53 p.m. to 5:05 p.m.
