To repel advances – Russia is expanding fortifications in southern Ukraine

Date:

Russia continues to strengthen its defense positions in the occupied territories of Ukraine. Defense installations in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhia oblast in particular were expanded in early February, the defense ministry in London announced on Monday in its daily intelligence update. A Ukrainian breakthrough into the area would have fatal consequences for the invaders.

The Russian fortifications can be seen in numerous images taken by ESA’s Sentinel-2 satellite – images that are publicly available. Trenches were dug and anti-tank barriers were set up along numerous frontline sites about 60 kilometers south of the regional capital, Zaporizhia. Associated recordings are also shared on social media (see below).

Breakthrough would threaten Crimea supplies
According to the British government, Ukrainian successes would have serious consequences for the Russian position. Should Ukrainian troops break through the front in Zaporizhia, the Russian “land bridge” between Russia and annexed Crimea would be jeopardized.

By contrast, a Ukrainian success in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk would jeopardize Russia’s wartime goal of “liberating” the Donbass. “Deciding which of these threats to prioritize is probably one of the most important dilemmas for planners of the Russian attack,” the ministry said.

‘Russia remains concerned’
“Despite the current operational focus on central Donbass, Russia remains concerned about guarding the extreme ends of its extensive front line,” it said. This is evidenced by the expansion of the positions in Zaporizhia and Luhansk, which are also being reinforced with new troops. The front line in Ukraine is about 1288 kilometers long.

The British Ministry of Defense has released daily updates on the progress of the war since the start of the offensive war against Ukraine almost a year ago, citing information from intelligence agencies. With this, the British government wants to both counter the Russian image and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a targeted disinformation campaign.
