A formation of three Russian military aircraft was intercepted over Poland by two Dutch F-35 fighter jets and escorted out of the area, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said. Moscow has not yet responded.
“The planes, unknown at the time, were approaching Polish NATO territory from Kaliningrad,” the ministry’s statement, translated by Reuters, said.
“After identification, it turned out to be three aircraft: a Russian IL-20M Coot-A escorted by two Su-27 flankers. The Dutch F-35s handed over escorts to NATO partners.’ Russia’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Kaliningrad is a Russian enclave on the Baltic coast, sandwiched between NATO and the EU member states of Poland and Lithuania.
