The Republic of Moldova closed its airspace on Tuesday afternoon. According to international media, an unknown drone was sighted in the skies over the country. Moldova is currently concerned about an attempted coup by Russia.
The president of the former Soviet Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, warned on Monday of Russian attempts to overthrow her country. Moscow’s plan includes inciting violent riots and attacks on Moldovan state institutions and disguising them as protests, the pro-European head of state said. Sandu based her statements on secret service documents that Moldova recently received from neighboring Ukraine.
Moscow denies
The Russian Foreign Ministry denied the allegations. “Such claims are absolutely baseless and unproven,” said ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. According to a statement released by the ministry on Tuesday, she accused both Ukraine and Moldova, which had previously made the allegations, of a “slander campaign”.
In view of Russia’s war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine, Moldova has long been concerned that the conflict over the breakaway region of Transnistria could escalate. In the region bordering Ukraine, the Moscow leadership supports pro-Russian separatists.
