After their rescue mission in the earthquake zone in the Turkish-Syrian border area, the Austrian soldiers will return home on Wednesday. The Turkish ambassador in Vienna thanked Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner for the mission.
Behind them lies a nerve-wracking mission: the 82-strong army team reportedly spent nearly a week tirelessly on the move in the earthquake zone. Between courage and desperation, rubble and looters. After a total of nine lives saved and dozens of (sometimes critical) medical procedures, we will return home tomorrow, Thursday. On Tuesday, Turkish Ambassador Ozan Ceyhun visited Defense Minister Tanner (ÖVP) to personally thank the army for the mission: “The scale in Turkey is catastrophic and the prompt assistance has helped save countless people,” Ceyhun said.
Tanner, too, only praised the successful operation and expressed her condolences to the families of the victims: “The number of deaths is depressing. I deeply regret the loss of the families who lost someone in the earthquake,” said the minister. She offered further assistance to the ambassador in the context of humanitarian aid.
