A spider monkey wearing a protective vest was also killed in a shootout between suspected criminals and police in Mexico. The long prehensile-tailed monkey was likely the pet of one of the 11 murdered criminals, local media reported Friday, citing Mexico’s attorney general.
The monkey was wearing a camouflage hoodie and a baby diaper, according to photos posted to Mexican media. He was found next to his owner, who was also shot. These primates, which live in Mexico and Central America, are on the list of endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Members of Mexican drug cartels often keep exotic animals.
