Some of Banksy’s new work was removed within hours

Date:

Mysterious street artist Banksy released a new piece of art on Valentine’s Day in southern England. The work entitled “Valentine’s Day Mascara” draws attention to domestic violence against women. You see a housewife in the style of the fifties. She has a black eye and is missing a tooth. Smiling, she “throws” her husband in a freezer. But the bulky waste was a thorn in the side of the authorities – or was it the motive?

Only a few hours after the work was published, the elementary part of the artwork was removed under the watchful eye of reporters present. There was initially no comment from the responsible city council.

The original image, spray-painted on a house wall in Margate, Kent, South East England, shows a 1950s style woman wearing an apron and yellow gloves. She has a black eye and is missing a tooth – and apparently she just pushed her partner into a freezer. At first there was more real garbage in front of the wall, including a broken chair and a broken beer bottle.

Two close-ups focus on the woman’s battered but smiling face. The artist calls the work “Valentine’s Day Mascara”. Observers suspected that the socially critical artist wanted to draw attention to domestic violence on the occasion of Valentine’s Day.

Banksy is said to be from the West English city of Bristol, but his exact identity is unknown. In his works he repeatedly addresses social grievances. Most recently, he caused a sensation with a series of photographs of war-damaged homes in Ukraine.
