Germans skeptical – ex-CIA boss: fighter jets for Ukraine inevitable

Ukraine’s demand to deliver fighter jets to, among other things, repel the Russian attack is strongly supported: on Thursday, the former CIA chief spoke out in favor of such a delivery. The German population, on the other hand, is skeptical about this. According to a recent survey, two-thirds of respondents reject such support.

The delivery of fighter jets is “inevitable,” ex-CIA chief David Petraeus said in an ORF “ZiB2” interview Thursday night. He considers the risk of a major escalation in the war in Ukraine manageable. Because Russian President Vladimir Putin has put one red line after another, crossing all of them and yet doing nothing, he said.

The war will probably end with negotiations. Until then, the question is which side will hold out longer, although he also believes that Crimea can be retaken.

Only 23% of Germans for delivery
However, the population of one of the possible countries of origin of such jets was skeptical. According to the German government, 64 percent of those polled in the ARD “Deutschlandtrend” rejected the delivery of German aircraft to Ukraine. Only 23 percent were in favor of it, 13 percent were unwilling or unable to make a statement, according to the survey published in the ARD “Morgenmagazin” on Friday.

AfD voters in particular were against it
Rejection of a fighter jet shipment is especially high among supporters of the AfD (86 percent) and the left (81 percent). The proposal is still most popular with supporters of the Greens (38 percent) and FDP (34 percent), with the Union (27 percent) and SPD (26 percent) already significantly fewer. Across party lines, however, there is consistently more rejection than approval.

Following Germany’s commitment to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy repeatedly called for fighter jets, “long-range missiles” and more artillery to defend against Russia.
