“Pretty smart” – US wants to prevent refrigerator chips for Russians

Date:

To prevent the use of technology from abroad for the Russian “war machine”, the US is now trying to prevent various exports of typical household appliances to Russia. According to the reasoning, Moscow is now extremely creative in applying parts of it in weapon systems.

That said the US Secretary of State Victoria Nuland Thursday. On the first anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the US is therefore substantially tightening sanctions against Russia.

The technology flow is limited
“You will see a major new sanctions package from the US and all our G7 partners around the 24th,” Secretary of State Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington on Thursday. Existing sanctions would be expanded in some areas, in particular the flow of technology for the Russian defense industry would be restricted.

Much equipment is reused
The new sanctions would target individuals, further restrict access to banks and crack down on ways to circumvent existing sanctions, particularly with regard to third countries. “We see the Russians getting pretty smart,” Nuland said. They imported things like laptops and refrigerators through third countries, sometimes from the US or G7 countries, and looted them. Chips and other things would then be “put into their war machine”.

Russia’s new offensive ‘very pathetic’
Known for her harsh criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Nuland mocked Russia’s military efforts in the battle for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. The war was “stuck”. “Russia has announced a new offensive. If so, it’s very sad,” she said.

The head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said Thursday that the capture of the city of Bakhmut could take months. He blamed the “monstrous military bureaucracy” in Moscow for the slow progress.
