In the case of a soldier who died on January 6 in the barracks of Wiener Neustadt airport, more details were announced on Friday. The 20-year-old had used cannabis, ecstasy and antidepressants in the weeks before the incident. Further reviews are pending.

The preliminary results of the autopsy showed – as reported – a bullet through the chest as the cause of death. A gunshot report is still pending, as are investigation results from the criminal investigation department of the state of Lower Austria into the possible motive for the recruit’s alleged attack on his superior, according to Erich Habitzl of the prosecutor’s office in Wiener Neustadt on Friday, who released a report from ORF Lower Austria. According to Habitzl, whether or not there will be a crime reconstruction also depends on the motive.

Threatened comrades and then attacked superiors
On the day of his death, the young recruit is said to have behaved aggressively and threatened his comrades with an assault rifle shortly before 07:00. The supervisor would have intervened. The conscript is said to have hit the 54-year-old several times on the head with an assault rifle, the man sustained a wound. During the attack, the sergeant allegedly drew his pistol and killed the 20-year-old. The 54-year-old was treated on an outpatient basis at the hospital.
