Rumors of a second wave of mobilization are circulating again in Russia, and a general mobilization is not ruled out. And so that the willingness to go to war increases, there is manipulation at all levels. A popular tool for this is television in the country.
“Today’s (Russian – editor’s note) ideologues propagate the idea that one should die for the fatherland – instead of living for the fatherland. Let’s not be fooled by our television again,” Novaya Gazeta’s editor-in-chief told the audience in his December 2021 Nobel Prize speech.
Two and a half months later, the Russian offensive war against Ukraine began. The idea that one had to ‘sacrifice’ oneself for one’s homeland was immediately picked up by television propaganda. It’s a trend now. A line. And the ultimate goal.
Of the “honour” of sacrificing oneself
The propaganda is often brought to the masses like this: in a well-lit TV studio, people of retirement age – whom the mobilization wave is unlikely to touch again – discuss their early heroic death. “Life is grossly overrated. Why fear the inevitable? And anyway, they go to heaven anyway. Death is the end of the earthly path and the beginning of another,” announced the well-known TV agitator and Putin- friend Vladimir Solovyov recently on the channel Rossiya 1. An expert promptly answered him: “For 30 years we lived in the day. But now we have a dream. Now we really know what we live for.”
The myth of the “depraved” West
It is pointed out that many people would not understand this – if nothing were more important to them than “stuffing themselves” with food, getting drunk to the point of cirrhosis of the liver, leaving the spoon in a nice country house and “pooping” on small diamonds”. . A common tenor of Russian propaganda is to portray the West as too “soft”, degenerate and wasteful. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said he should express himself in a particularly patriotic manner.
And the Orthodox oligarch Konstantin Malofeev also had to do his part on TV. So for him there is a very simple distinction between a patriot and a ‘non-patriot’. A patriot is someone who would die for his country. And if someone is not ready, then he is not.
Smartly dressed and with her hair up, the well-known TV propagandist Margarita Simonjan even philosophized that an early death doesn’t matter that much. After all, from the point of view of the universe, it doesn’t matter if you go underground today, ten years from now, or 20 years from now.
