A touring car was hit by snow masses in an avalanche on Saturday afternoon in the Tyrolean Schmirn (district of Innsbruck-Land). The result was a large-scale operation. The winter sports enthusiast could be released.
Around 3.30 pm, the alarm was received by the Tyrol control room. The accident apparently happened in the area of the Hohe Warte (2687 meters) in the direction of the Wildlahnertal. Originally there were three buried persons. Fortunately, according to information from the control center in Tyrol, only one person was buried.
Numerous emergency services on site
The mountain rescue service St. Jodok, Gries am Brenner and several helicopters were involved in the search. The victim could be freed by the comrades or the emergency services. Nothing is known about the health condition. At the beginning of February there was already an avalanche accident with two injuries on the Hohe Warte.
Currently danger level 2 in Tyrol
In Tyrol today there is an avalanche warning level 2 on the five-part scale – ie moderate danger. But: “Weak layers in the old snow can still be caused by individual winter sports enthusiasts, especially at transitions from little to a lot of snow, such as at the entrance to gullies and potholes and in rarely used touring terrain,” says the avalanche warning service in Tyrol.
The danger spots are rare, but hard to spot. Avalanches are usually medium in size. There is a risk of falling on the hard snow surface on the steep terrain. “Especially on very steep sunny slopes, small to medium-sized wet avalanches are possible with daily warming,” the experts ruled on Saturday.
