The recovery was complex and not without danger for helpers at night either: a hiker had fallen 50 meters down the Kleiner Schönberg near Gmunden (Upper Austria) and her poor knowledge of German did not make things any easier.
The 48-year-old Hungarian from the district of Eferding was on her way to the top of the Kleiner Schönberg am Traunsee with her Hungarian companion of the same age. Although the woman had already been to the top of the 894-meter-high mountain several times, the two lost sight of the marked hiking trail after a short distance and ended up in impassable terrain.
At an altitude of about 750 meters, the hiker suddenly slipped in the steep snowy terrain and fell about 50 meters. Her companion immediately made an emergency call, but due to the man’s poor knowledge of German and English, neither the circumstances nor the location of the accident were known at first. The seriously injured and initially unconscious mountaineer could only be located after several phone calls, a mobile phone tracking and a search with the emergency medical helicopter “Martin 3”.
Due to the unfavorable weather conditions with rain and storm, a helicopter rescue was not possible, so the mountain rescue and alpine police went on foot to the scene of the accident. After first aid under the direction of the mountain rescue doctor, the Hungarian was tied up with the mountain stretcher in the partly vertical terrain to the Mairalm forest road. There she was handed over to the emergency medical team and then taken to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Vöcklabruck.
