On Saturday evening, police officers from the WEGA special unit and police officers from the Otto-Wagner-Platz police station had to break into an apartment in Vienna’s Alsergrund district. The reason: a mentally ill man (28) kept his mother captive in the apartment.
Shortly before the radical operation, the caretaker had found a note in the courtyard with a disturbing message. The police were immediately alerted. The note stated that the author was in the apartment in question, that she had been locked up by her mentally ill son and that she needed urgent help.
Son dragged mother back into the apartment
A few minutes later, the officers were already on the scene. The emergency services were able to see the woman through a window in the stairwell on the balcony of the apartment. “She tried to draw attention to herself. Suddenly the son stepped onto the balcony, grabbed his mother from behind and dragged her back into the apartment,” the Vienna police reported.
Wanted to set apartment on fire with Bunsen burner
The officers did not hesitate for a moment and broke into the apartment where the victim was staying. After the man’s 47-year-old mother was taken from the home, she told officers that her son was suffering from mental illness. He locked her in the apartment, spilled flammable liquid and threatened to set it on fire. She could snatch a Bunsen burner from his hands and throw it into the yard.
The 28-year-old also lit candles and spread them on the floor. Here too, the woman managed to erase them and throw them away. She hid prepared gas cartridges and a hammer.
The young man was taken to the detention center
The 28-year-old was taken to a hospital due to his mental illness and then to a prison on the orders of the Vienna public prosecutor. According to the police, the 47-year-old mother used her right to refuse to testify during the police questioning.
Drugs voluntarily discontinued
Police spokesman Markus Dittrich told APA the 28-year-old had been treated with medication for his mental illness before the incident, but then stopped taking the tablets on his own. How long the woman has actually been detained cannot be determined for the time being due to the lack of an explanation.
