The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia fired more than 200 rockets into northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights on Thursday morning. The attack was “part of a response” to the death of a senior commander killed by the Israeli army on Wednesday.
Rocket alerts were heard again and again. Israeli media reported that Hezbollah fired at least 200 rockets, ten anti-tank missiles and 25 drones into Israel. A Hezbollah source confirmed to Al Jazeera television that the attack was in “response to the killing of commander Mohammad Nimah Nasser” near the city of Tyre.
Security circles in Jerusalem said Wednesday afternoon that the commander in question was responsible for part of the Hezbollah operation along the border with Israel.. Since October, there have been repeated clashes between the Israeli army and the pro-Iranian militia, with deaths on both sides.
Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting almost every day since the Gaza war began, and the intensity has increased significantly recently. There are fears that the conflict will spread. Israel wants the Shiite militia to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border – as stipulated by a UN resolution.
Hezbollah says it will only stop shelling once a ceasefire is reached in the Gaza Strip.
