Help from neighbor – wheelchair user rescued from burning apartment

Date:

A wheelchair user from St. Veit owes her life to her thoughtful neighbor and her daughter. On Sunday, a fire broke out in the apartment of the disabled woman.

At 11:51 a.m. on Sunday, sirens sounded in the St. Veit an der Glan district. A fire broke out in an apartment in a block of flats on Friesacher Strasse. According to the alarm, the resident, a woman who is dependent on a wheelchair, was still in the apartment on the first floor.

Equipped with heavy respiratory protection, three fire brigades arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. “The smell of fire was already perceptible in front of the house. However, the investigation showed that fortunately no one was in the affected apartment,” says Jürgen Sampl of the FF St. Veit.

“Could have been bad”
An observant neighbor who lives next door knew about the fire in advance and did not hesitate for long, but rushed to the rescue with her daughter and a hand fire extinguisher. After the first attempts to extinguish the fire, they brought the disabled woman outside. “If no one had noticed the fire, it could have ended badly. Because if the wheelchair user had been in the back room, for example, she would not have come out alone,” reports Markus Korath of FF St. Veit.

Children in the smoky stairwell
Three children were also found in the stairwell on the second floor, who were brought outside by the respiratory protection team. After the fire was extinguished, the apartment and stairwell were made smoke-free with the help of powerful fans. The wheelchair user and a fire department paramedic sustained signs of smoke inhalation. Fortunately no one else was injured.

The FF St. Veit, St. Donat and Obermühlbach-Schaumboden were deployed with a total of 45 men and nine vehicles.
