An Australian tourist has died in a shark attack in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. The 59-year-old was swimming near a platform on Sunday when the shark attacked and bit him several times, local broadcaster 1ère Nouvelle Calédonie reported.
The attack took place just 150 meters from a busy beach in the capital Noumea on Sunday afternoon. According to the broadcaster, the victim was brought ashore by two people on jet skis. However, his injuries, especially to his legs, were so severe that all attempts at resuscitation failed.
Shark attacks are rather rare
It was initially unclear which shark species it was. Attacks by these predatory fish are quite rare in the area. On Sunday, an attempt was made to track down the attacking animal from the air using drones.
Mayor Sonia Lagarde ordered all beaches around Nouméa to close.
