Two people have been killed in gunfire in Pakistan. A man allegedly shot and killed a Norwegian citizen of Pakistani origin and then himself. Police suspect religious hatred as a motive.
The man shot was a member of the Ahmadiyya community facing persecution in Pakistan. Followers identify themselves as Muslim, but are not officially recognized as such in predominantly Sunni Pakistan and are repeatedly persecuted. The alleged perpetrator, who would have acted out of religious hatred, would have shot the 75-year-old man. His own body was found several miles from the crime scene. The police suspect suicide.
Not an isolated case
A few years ago, the case of an American citizen of Pakistani descent who was shot dead in the middle of a courtroom because he belonged to the Ahmadiyya community attracted attention. The victim was on trial for allegedly violating Pakistan’s blasphemy law. The US State Department subsequently asked the government of Pakistan to repeal the blasphemy law to stop fueling religiously motivated crimes in the future.
