Six Russian soldiers were killed in a fire in a military shelter on Monday. The cause is gross negligence in handling a flammable liquid.
The tragedy took place in Russia’s Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, the defense ministry in Moscow said. According to the Telegram channel “Baza”, an explosion occurred when soldiers turned on a stove while spilling a flammable liquid added.
The flames quickly reached the shelter and killed six soldiers. The exact location of the accident was not mentioned. The Kursk area is used by the Russian army as a deployment area in the offensive war against neighboring Ukraine.
Russians would not have captured the village of Hrianykivka
Ukraine, meanwhile, has denied Russian claims that it captured the village of Hrianykivka in the northeastern region of Kharkov. Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks near the village, the general staff said. However, Russian troops would continue to shell the area with artillery. The defense ministry in Moscow said on Saturday that Russian troops had taken the village.
High losses
As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in his nightly video address on Sunday, Russia has suffered heavy casualties in the fighting in eastern Donbass. The situation there is “very complicated”. Ukraine inflicts “extraordinarily high losses” on the invaders. Selenskyj mentioned several places in the region where fighting has been going on for months. The information cannot be independently verified. A Russian statement is not available.
Is Ukraine preparing a nuclear provocation?
The Russian Defense Ministry, however, accuses Ukrainian leaders of preparing a nuclear provocation in the war zone – without presenting any evidence. In a statement published Sunday, the Russian military leadership claimed that Kiev would subsequently blame Moscow for the “gross violation” of nuclear safety. However, the ministry does not explain how this accusation came about and there is no evidence for it.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously claimed that he knew where Kiev was building a dirty bomb containing nuclear material. Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency have traveled to Ukraine to investigate the allegations. There was no confirmation of the Russian claims.
Mutual accusations
According to Russian information, next week, on the first anniversary of the offensive war ordered by Putin on February 24, Kiev intends to accuse Moscow of indiscriminate bombing of nuclear objects and radioactive pollution of the environment. Before this, some containers with radioactive materials had been transported through an unnamed European country, thus circumventing customs rules. The material must then be used to stage contamination of radioactive hazardous objects.
Ukraine, for its part, repeatedly accuses Russia of wanting to cause a nuclear catastrophe with missiles flying past nuclear power plants. The leadership in Kiev speaks of terrorism and sanctions against Moscow’s nuclear industry.
