The Turkish Medical Association has questioned the official information on the deaths from the earthquake. They want to request the number of burials from the municipalities in early March and thus check government information, said Vedat Bulut of the TTB Medical Association of the German news agency.
“We have doubts about the numbers,” he said. “For example, when 6,000 deaths were reported in Kahramanmaras, there were burial records of 11,000 people.” The reason for this may be that the official figures are understated. Theoretically, however, it could also be that the dead were brought to Kahramanmaras by their relatives from other provinces.
The actual number of dead is estimated at 60,000
At least 41,156 people in Turkey died in connection with the tremors on Monday, according to the state disaster relief agency Afad. Bulut estimates the actual death toll at around 60,000, “but that is not an objective estimate at the moment. We will receive the burial numbers from the municipalities, then it will be clear.”
