Fatal accident – tanker sinks off Philippines: oil spills

Date:

As Typhoon ‘Gaemi’ raged, the tanker ‘Terra Nova’ sank west of Manila on Thursday. The accident claimed one life. Now the next catastrophe is approaching: oil is leaking from the wreck…

A salvage company will begin pumping out the oil on Sunday to prevent an environmental disaster, the Coast Guard said. The operation is expected to take seven days. The 144-foot-long vessel is at a shallow depth of just 111 feet, making pumping out the oil easier.

An inspection of the oil tanker ‘Terra Nova’, which is in Manila Bay, found ‘minimal leaks’ in the valves, a coast guard spokesman said. The tank, which is filled with 1.4 million litres of industrial fuel oil, is still intact, so the situation is not yet worrying.

Fishermen are warned about the area
However, “a small amount” of oil leaked: the visible oil slick had grown from its original three kilometers to a length of twelve to fourteen kilometers. Fishermen are advised to avoid the area.

Huge oil spill after shipping accident
Last year, a ship carrying 800,000 liters of industrial oil sank off the coast of Oriental Mindoro province. The oil spill spread to an area of about 10,000 square kilometers. One of the most species-rich marine areas in the world was affected.
