“Shoes are slippery” – Tourist (20) fell to his death on Half Dome

Date:

A young tourist (20) fell to her death in front of her father in Yosemite National Park. Grace previously said that her shoes were so slippery. “It all happened so fast. I tried to grab her, but she was already gone,” the father now said.

The incident occurred on July 13 on the 8,700-foot Half Dome mountain in the U.S. state of California. Grace and her father Jonathan Rohloff had planned a 26-mile hike through the popular park. They also reached the summit of the dome-shaped mountain in Yosemite National Park.

But suddenly the weather changed. “A black cloud came drifting in. I said, ‘We have to go down now. We shouldn’t be here when it rains,'” said Jonathan Rohloff. He and his daughter then began their descent, ‘Bild’ reported online on Saturday. The surface of the mountain was slippery and wet at the time – a problem even for experienced hikers.

New shoes were fatal
Grace’s new hiking boots may have been her undoing. The young student had bought them specifically for the national park, and shortly before the accident she complained that they were slippery. The father tried to calm the daughter, but shortly after she slipped. “It all happened so fast. I tried to grab her, but she was already gone.” Grace fell past him into the abyss.

Emergency call made
According to the report, Rohloff called the gorge in vain, while other hikers made an emergency call. It took three hours for the rescue helicopter to arrive and could only confirm that the tourist was dead. She had suffered a fractured skull.

Thousands of tourists climb Half Dome each year. Fatal accidents occur time and again, partly due to the slippery rock. Permission from the park authority is required for the climb.
