Concerns about escalation – The Chinese president wants a summit with Putin in Moscow

Date:

The Chinese leadership is apparently very concerned about a possible further escalation of the war in Ukraine. President Xi Jinping plans to travel to Moscow in the coming months for a summit meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing informed circles.

Just a few days ago, Italian media announced a “peace speech” by Xi, scheduled for February 24 – the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. This was confided by China’s top foreign policy leader Wang Yi during a meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. Now Beijing apparently wants to become even more active in helping end the war in Ukraine.

Meeting in April or May?
According to the Wall Street Journal, the plans are in the early stages and the date is still unclear. The summit would be part of a rift in multi-party peace talks over Ukraine. A meeting is conceivable in April or early May, when Russia celebrates its victory over Germany in World War II.

The meeting was likely also a topic during China’s chief diplomat Wang’s current visit to Moscow, the paper reports. According to Russian media reports, he spoke of ironclad relations between the nations after a meeting with National Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev on Tuesday. He will meet with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday.
