In the middle of Innsbruck – seniors fear: “It’s a pure ghetto!”

Date:

Innsbruck is actually considered a fairly safe city. A pensioner still doesn’t dare to go out in the evening. It’s “dangerous” in her environment, she says. The police try to calm the woman down. No criminal activity could be detected.

“This is the purest ghetto here,” exclaims Mrs. G. The pensioner owns an apartment in a notorious apartment building in the west of Innsbruck. “Sex, Drugs and Rock’n’Roll” seems to be the order of the day – or should I say “order of night”? Because the poor woman hardly dares to go outside as soon as it is dark. In desperation she turns to the “Tiroler Krone”: the battered woman, who reports in the middle of the night from strange smells to the stench of cigarettes, finds the proportion of foreigners so high that she suspects that “the social service sends them all here” .

Of course, she doesn’t care where a person comes from, but habits and smells are simply unknown. Moreover, far too many people would live in too small apartments here.

‘Drugs are traded on the street’
Incidentally, ‘the office’ contradicts it, it does not send anyone anywhere, the clients look for the apartments themselves. But to whom the apartments around Mrs G. are rented is not in her hands. She is convinced that “drugs are dealt with” on the block and that prostitution has taken place here at least in the past. The state of the house is also unbearable for Mrs G.: windows, facades, balconies, much of it is damaged and outdated. The “Krone” investigates the woman’s concerns, contacts the police and the city.

The neighborhood is known to the police, the neighborhood is a “hotspot”
As it turns out, the neighborhood is known to the police, there are a few “hotspots” in Innsbruck, and this block is one of them. The city reacts immediately and regularly sends checks by the police and MÜG (mobile surveillance group). So what does the situation look like after a few weeks, has anything improved?

The police couldn’t find anything
During their regular checks, the police could find nothing more than last year. Talks with the residents also showed that there are no problems at the moment. In any case, the presence is still increased. Mrs G. is now providing a better ventilation system to control the smell. She couldn’t say how things went in the evening and what was going on, because she didn’t go out at night. Is everything all right? No, the accident just doesn’t seem to leave the retiree. Because she has the feeling that the city in her neighborhood doesn’t care about the bus and tram stops: “There are hundreds of Tchicks and shards of glass.”

For Mrs G., the nightmare is soon over anyway
Deputy BM Johannes Anzengruber (ÖVP) is in any case happy that the police are carrying out more checks to increase the sense of security. The city cannot intervene in the state of the building as it is privately owned. But the city is watching the area. For Mrs. G., the nightmare should soon be over anyway, because she would like to sell her apartment soon and move to “assisted living”.
