Reemtsma trial – Police forgot accused kidnapper in prison

Date:

The 55th day of the trial of former Reemtsma kidnapper Thomas Drach should have started on Wednesday morning. However, because the police forgot to take the suspect from prison to court, the trial does not start until 2 p.m.

“You see, the carnival is not quite over yet,” judge Jörg Michael Bern said laconically about the accident. It was no longer possible to arrest Drach at short notice, since at the same time the trial of a suspected member of the jewel robbers gang was underway. Increased security measures also apply to this defendant. In concrete terms, this means that a large contingent of police officers secures the courthouse. There were not enough personnel left to apprehend former Reemtsma kidnapper Thomas Drach.

Robbery and attempted murder
In addition, Drach is accused of four robberies of security transporters in Cologne, Frankfurt am Main and Limburg in Hesse. In addition, the prosecutor’s office charges him with attempted murder, as he allegedly shot money couriers during two robberies and seriously injured them. On March 25, 1996, Drach and his accomplices kidnapped the Hamburg tobacco heir Jan Philipp Reemtsma from his property and left a ransom of 20 million German marks. Reemtsma was then chained in a basement and Drach threatened him with mutilation. The 62-year-old was sentenced to fourteen and a half years in prison for the crime.

Helicopter to court
An alleged accomplice from the Netherlands is now in the dock with Drach. The 55th day of the Drach trial will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Bern had agreed with the presiding officer of the “Pink Panther” trial that there would be hearings only until 1 p.m. and then the defendant would be transported back to prison. In return, the officials would have to take Drach to court. Usually, the suspect is flown to court by helicopter.
