Dramatic situation in Ranten (Murau district) in Styria: meltwater caused 250 cubic meters of rubble to slide away. A family had to leave the house for a short time for safety reasons and an access road was blocked. Emergency services are working at full speed. Everything should be freely passable again by Friday at the latest.
The members of the Upper Styrian volunteer fire brigade in Ranten, including mayor Franz Kleinferchner, did not have time to properly celebrate Carnival on Tuesday. At the edge a slope had come loose and 250 cubic meters of earth (that corresponds to a volume of 250,000 litres!) moved towards a house.
“The door of the house was smashed and the garage was damaged. In addition, an access road was buried,” says Kleinferchner.
Due to the high temperatures, the snow has melted in recent days. The meltwater loosened the earth, causing the slope to slide. The emergency services have diverted the water so that the embankment and the rubble masses can dry out.
“Thanks to the Fire Department”
Fortunately, those affected who had to leave their homes at short notice were able to return on Wednesday. “We’re fine,” said the homeowner. “Thanks to the fire brigade for the help and the effort!”
“The road from Ranten to Rantenbichl had to be closed,” says the mayor. Everything should be back to normal by Friday.
