A student in the south of France attacked his Spanish teacher with a knife, fatally wounding him, French media reported on Wednesday. The suspect, a 16-year-old boy, has been arrested. According to investigators, the teen has psychological problems.
The teacher was in mortal danger after the attack, she died shortly afterwards.

After the stabbing, the student locked the classroom door and punched the teacher several times in the face. The teacher went into cardiac and respiratory arrest and was in critical condition. Around 11:30 a.m., the public prosecutor’s office announced her death.

After stabbing the teacher – and while his classmates tried to protect themselves – the student fled into the next room with his rifle. There, according to a police source, he explained to the teacher present that a voice had asked him to do something. The teacher managed to get the gun and stayed with the boy until the police arrived. The student, who was not known to the judiciary, stated during the interrogation that he was “possessed”.
The secondary school in the city center of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a very prestigious Catholic educational institution.
“Drama of Exceptional Seriousness”
French Education Minister Pap Ndiaye, who had traveled to the school in the Basque Country because of the incident, spoke of a “drama of exceptional seriousness that moves all of France”. He wanted to express his sympathy, but also his solidarity with people in education. “This is a sad day for state education.” Ndiaye also announced that a minute of silence will be observed at all schools across the country at 3pm on Thursday.
