Chaos in the morning traffic – climate activists blocked the southern entrance to Vienna

Date:

Ninth day of the disruptive wave announced by the activists of the last generation in Vienna: On Thursday morning, the climate demonstrators blocked both directions of travel on Altmannsdorferstrasse and also on Landstrasser Gurtel – again there were traffic jams. The Viennese police officers were quickly on the scene.

At 08:00, several participants took to the streets with banners in Meidling and on the country road (“We’re racing into climate hell!”). Since then, they have blocked traffic to draw attention to the climate crisis. The glue has been used again.

“A blockade in the Altmannsdorferstrasse area has already been officially resolved,” the police tweeted on social media a short time later. The officials were also able to lift the blockades on the Landstrasser Gurtel.

A total of 14 arrests
“According to the current state of affairs, there have been 14 arrests,” said police spokesman Markus Dittrich. Unlike the days before, none of the actions spilled oil.

Monday started the second week in a row in which the last generation in Vienna wants to draw attention to the climate crisis with their actions. “For a second week we are blocking traffic with our bodies because our future is at stake,” the activists said in a broadcast.

Accept fines
The activists of the last generation are calling for a “radical rethink” of the climate crisis. For example, they demand a ban on fracking and a speed limit of 100 throughout Austria. To draw attention to this, they use radical forms of protest, such as sticking to the street or dousing famous paintings with paint or soup. They also accept sanctions for this.
