The Wiener Hofburg prepares for the Akademikerball on Friday with a bomb detection dog, metal detector and facial recognition for the planned attack – including the restricted area.
The city becomes a fortress again to protect the Akademikerball. The organizer is also preparing itself for any disruptive actions – because ten demonstrations have been registered. “We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our guests,” says organizer Udo Guggenbichler. The arsenal in detail: high-resolution cameras with facial recognition software. Guggenbichler: “This allows us to evaluate all data in the event of an incident. If someone has done something wrong, they can rest assured that we will catch them.”
In addition, a metal detector is used as at the airport. “We also have a bomb detection dog in the squad. No one should feel uncomfortable with us.” According to the presale, that doesn’t seem to be the case either – “we’re almost sold out”.
The police will cordon off the area (see graph) from 5 p.m. with a parking ban, hundreds of officers are on duty. The ring must be closed to car traffic on a large scale at 4.30 pm. This means that tram traffic will also be cancelled.
Big guesswork about the guests from Russia
It is still unclear whether Russian guests will also visit the ball. In any case, the nine official OSCE diplomats were told that participation in private events, such as attending the academic ball, would constitute an abuse of the right of residence. However, it remains to be seen how the 551 Russian tourists in the country will fare. Incidentally, so many visas were issued between February 1 and February 21 – although there are actually more difficult entry rules.
