After a two-year break due to Corona, the free “Academic Ball” will take place again on Friday in Vienna’s Hofburg. The event will again be accompanied by demonstrations – 2,000 to 3,000 participants are expected. The police is on duty with 1200 agents, around the Hofburg there is a blockade from 5 p.m.
The protests against the ball – described by critics as an international network meeting for right-wing extremists – are in any case causing traffic problems in Vienna’s inner city.
Ring blocked in sections
The Ring will be closed to traffic in sections – from 4:30 p.m. from Schwarzenbergplatz to Schottentor. Tram traffic in this area is also affected, but not the metro.
“Throw fascists out of the Hofburg!”
The “offensive against the right” has again called for a demonstration through the inner city. The start of the protest march (motto: “Throw fascists out of the Hofburg!”) is at 6 p.m. in the Sigmund-Freud-Park at the Schottentor. The demo route leads through the city to Morzinplatz, where a closing meeting is scheduled at 7:30 PM. The organizers expect 2000 to 3000 participants.
The FPÖ will be strongly represented at the ball. Party boss Herbert Kickl is not participating – he is on a campaign tour for the state elections in Carinthia and is also “generally not a big balloper”, according to the party. On the other side will come Norbert Hofer, President of the Third National Council, Christian Hafenecker, Secretary General of the FPÖ and Walter Rosenkranz, the FPÖ Ombudsman, who will also give the opening speech.
