The home army is once again rocked by a violent crime. After an argument between two non-commissioned officers in Enns, a 20-year-old from Mattighofen allegedly stabbed his comrade (33) from Mistelbach (Lower Austria) in the face – with an umbrella.

Friday afternoon at the Army NCO Academy in Enns seemed like pure enjoyment. 348 new officers – including 22 women – were fired for successfully completing their one-and-a-half year training. Defense Secretary Klaudia Tanner attended the ceremony, as did Chief of Staff Rudolf Striedinger. But before that there was a tragedy.
A drunken party turned into a fight
A lot of alcohol may have flowed as the group celebrated its graduation. At around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, the mood changed among a group of comrades who had just left a bar and were apparently on their way home. According to witnesses, the 20-year-old from the Innviertel region repeatedly teased his 33-year-old colleague and did not want to stop. The older of the two eventually confronted the young man.
Attacked with an umbrella
In front of a bar, the Innviertler allegedly attacked the Lower Austrian with an umbrella without warning and stabbed him in the face. But the victim was dazed, but was taken back to the barracks by a colleague. However, the injured man’s condition deteriorated and an ambulance was called a few hours later.
He immediately arranged for the man to be taken to the UKH in Linz. It soon became clear that it was a matter of life or death.
The victim was even in mortal danger
Because the Lower Austrian’s head injury under one eye was life-threatening, the man was put into an artificial deep sleep. According to information from “Krone”, he was no longer in danger of life on Saturday afternoon.
The perpetrator refused to testify
The alleged perpetrator – he was still part of the official selection – was arrested and taken into custody, but initially refused to testify. The army was of course already aware of the incident: “We know about the incident in Enns. However, it happened outside working hours and also outside the barracks. Now it is the turn of the police and the prosecutor’s office,” explains Colonel Michael Bauer .
This is the second serious incident in a short time for the army. It wasn’t until January that a 20-year-old soldier was shot dead in Wiener Neustadt barracks after a superior dispute – apparently in self-defense.
