In the future, about 40,000 inmates will be locked up on 165 acres in a prison complex in El Salvador. The mega “Häfn” was put into operation at the beginning of February and now the first 2000 gang members have moved in. President Nayib Bukele presented the already delivered systems on Wednesday evening (local time) during a video tour.
The video, which was broadcast nationally, shows how the men – half naked, without shoes and often with extensive tattoos – are taken to prison and then to their cells. They are transported in buses to the place where up to 40,000 gang members will be imprisoned in the future.
According to the government, the prison covers a total area of 165 hectares in the center of the country. About 850 military and police officers are to supervise the Center for the Containment of Terrorism (CECOT).
“We prosecute!”
The detention center in Tecoluca, some 75 kilometers southeast of the capital San Salvador, is an essential factor in fully winning the fight against the violent gangs, Bukele said on Twitter: “This will be their new home, where they will be for decades. living. confused, unable to cause any more damage to the populace. We pursue!”

A state of emergency has been in effect in the country with six million inhabitants for almost a year. A number of fundamental rights have been restricted. The government wants to curb the violence of the criminal gangs. Since then, more than 62,000 suspected gang members have been arrested and the homicide rate has dropped significantly recently.
Human rights activists, however, speak of arbitrary arrests. With a prison rate of 605 per 100,000 people, El Salvador already has more prisoners than any other country, according to the World Prison Brief database. Nearly 40,000 people are in prisons.
