Leogang tragedy – tourism employees died in a bus accident

Shortly before 8am on Saturday, a small black car suddenly skidded on the B164 near Leogang and crashed into a bus. There was slush on the main road. Three tourism workers from Hungary were killed. The Austrian bus driver was injured.

The driver of the small car lost control on a slight left turn. Only a few hundred meters beyond the state border of Tyrol and Salzburg, the car with a Hungarian license plate collided with a bus of line 690. It was supposed to arrive in Hochfilzen at 8.02 am.

Minutes later, the fire brigade and the Red Cross arrived on the scene. Dozens of emergency services from Tyrol and Salzburg were on their way to the scene of the accident, including three helicopters. It was assumed that the bus was well occupied with passengers. It soon turned out on the spot that only the bus driver (51) was on the bus. The occupants of the car were all trapped.

Despite the quickest possible action by the emergency services, the two women (aged 29 and 36) from Hungary had no chance of being impacted. The employees of a hotel in Leogang died at the scene of the accident. The driver (25) died in the afternoon in the accident hospital of Salzburg. The bus driver was flown by helicopter to Zell hospital.

For operations manager Bernd Hirschbichler of the Red Cross, the mission was over after two hours. The fire brigade of Leogang and Hochfilzen was still busy with rescue work in the afternoon and the B164 remained closed.

Accident expert and appraiser Gerhard Kronreif was already on site in the late morning. He must clarify the cause of the accident to the public prosecutor. An accident that tragically ended with three deaths.
