At least 40 migrants die in a shipwreck in southern Italy

At least 27 migrants have died when their boat capsized not far from the Italian town of Crotone, in Calabria, coastguard sources reported to La Repubblica newspaper on Sunday. Apparently, the overweight barge they were traveling in broke in two due to a large wave. Among the victims are “a newborn baby of a few months,” according to the testimony of a firefighter participating in the rescue efforts. Rescue services continue to search for survivors, with initial investigations suggesting they were, in principle, from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

This new shipwreck comes just days after the approval in the Italian parliament of controversial new rules for the rescue of migrants, promoted by the government dominated by the far right.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Fratelli d’Italia (FDI) party, took power in a coalition in October after vowing to reduce the number of migrants entering Italy.

The new law requires humanitarian ships to carry out only one rescue per trip to sea, which critics say increases the risk of death in the central Mediterranean, considered the world’s most dangerous journey for migrants.
