At least since the war in Ukraine, “Get out of gas” has become a dogma. But with only renewable energy sources we are left out in Austria. Read here why that is.
The war and the associated reduction in gas supplies showed Austria’s vulnerability. For months, discussions have raged on how to reduce our dependence on Putin’s grace. What Germany is hastily achieving looks like this in Austria: From February 2022 to December 2022, we “pushed” independence from Russia by a whopping eight percent to 71 percent.
This is in contrast to the “coming out of thin air” dogma. This is supported by the fact that, according to energy experts, we are making little effort to build pipeline infrastructure away from the Russian tap. So not just moving away from Russian gas, to an Austria without gas – wherever it comes from?
Full gas release like a shot in the knee?
Then electricity from wind, water or solar energy must light and heat Austrian households or keep the industry running. But a complete forgo of gas could turn out to be a shot in the knee.
