Oil imports from Russia to Germany practically came to a standstill at the beginning of the year. In January this was only 3,500 tonnes, which had already been imported into the European Union last year. In January 2022, 2.8 million tons were imported. Arithmetic a drop of 99.9%.
In January of the current year, Germany imported a total of 6.2 million tons of oil worth 3.8 billion euros. That was 20.5 percent less in quantity and 9.6 percent less in value than in the same month last year.
According to calculations by the statisticians of the Federal Statistical Office, Russia’s share of Germany’s total oil imports fell from 36.5 percent in January 2022 to 0.1 percent in January 2023. This was offset by higher imports from Norway (plus 44 percent to 987,000 tons)., the United Kingdom (+42 percent to 959,000 tons) and Kazakhstan (+34.6 percent to 928,000 tons).
EU import ban on Russian crude oil
Around the turn of the year, Germany stopped all crude oil imports from Russia. Since December 5, there has been an EU import ban on Russian crude oil, which is supplied by tanker. On January 1, 2023, a German import ban on oil from the Druzhba pipeline followed. The oil embargo is intended to make it more difficult for Russian President Vladimir Putin to finance the war against Ukraine.
