After the boat accident off the coast of the southern Italian region of Calabria, which killed at least 63 people, Italy is calling on the EU to take a more determined fight against people smuggling. “We need a Europe that acts, and fast. The only way to prevent these tragedies is to prevent migrants from leaving,” Meloni said Monday night.
“I have sent a letter to the European Council and the European Commission today asking for immediate implementation of what we discussed at the last European Council on migration,” Meloni told Rai1.
“Smuggling is an international problem,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who plans to discuss the issue Monday afternoon at a bilateral meeting with his French counterpart, Gérald Darmanin, in Paris.
“On the issue of migrants, Europe must do more. The transition from words to deeds is fundamental,” said the non-party minister.
Italy’s interior minister was criticized for claiming that migrants should not risk their children’s lives during dangerous sea voyages across the Mediterranean. “Desperation can never justify travel conditions that endanger the lives of their own children,” the interior minister told reporters in Calabria on Monday.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) responded immediately. “The words Piantedosis are little more than a sad shift of responsibility, yet another slap in the face to the victims and survivors of this tragedy,” MSF spokesman Marco Bertotto said during the press conference on the Crotone shipwreck.
