This season they have the highest quota in recent years, as they can fish 17% more than last year, about 30,000 tons.
Euskaraz irakurri: Antxoaren kostera gaur hasiko da Gipuzkoako et Bizkaiko arrantzaleentzat
At midnight, the anchovy season begins for fishermen from Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, which will have the highest quota in recent years. They will be able to fish 17% more than last year, about 30,000 tons.
The figure is comparable to that of recent years, but there are new developments, as the fine that the European Commission imposed on Spain in 2013 for overfishing mackerel has been significantly reduced. This year the quota will only be reduced by 180 tonnes and there will be no fines from next year.
According to the Council of Scientists for Marine Research, there are plenty of anchovies in our waters. For example, it recommended catching 33,000 tons in the Bay of Biscay and the Bay of Biscay.
In this context, the arrantzales hope to improve on last year’s results. Most of the quota is fished in spring and the rest in autumn.
