The white wallaby has been hiding for more than a week in the forest near Deutsch-Bieling in the district of Güssing, not far from his enclosure. All attempts to catch the one-year-old kangaroo relative have failed so far. As soon as a human approaches the shy marsupial, it quickly jumps away and darts away.

“Chepi” is not so easy to understand. Now the owners use different tactics. “We need to take a break and not try to catch the wallaby again,” recommends one breeder.
Only correspondingly large live traps are set up. “We can wait and see, we just have to be patient and have a little luck,” says the expert. The use of an anesthesia gun is not recommended for the time being. “Its use is not without problems and can be dangerous,” explains veterinarian Charlotte Klement.
Blowpipe unsuitable
An anesthetic blowpipe, on the other hand, is not suitable at all. “You should get two or three meters with it, but a wallaby won’t allow that.” That means staying calm and waiting for “Chepi” to fall into the trap on its own.
