Explosions near Minsk – Who attacked Russian military plane?

Date:

Several explosions took place at a military airport near the Belarusian capital Minsk on Sunday. Government opponents suspected an act of sabotage by Belarusian partisans. The country’s Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Ambrazevich has now commented on this.

There is still no official response to the attack on a Russian reconnaissance aircraft last Sunday. For this reason, he firmly believed that this was another false claim, Deputy Foreign Minister Ambrazevich said on the sidelines of the UN Disarmament Conference in Geneva. The purpose was to point out perceived deficiencies in national security.

Anti-government organization suspected that partisans were behind it
The Belarusian anti-government organization Bypol announced on Monday that partisans destroyed a Russian early warning aircraft at an airfield near the capital Minsk with a drone strike on Sunday. It was the most successful act of sabotage since early last year, said an adviser to exiled opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya. There was no comment from Russia.

The role of Belarus in the war in Ukraine
Belarus is a close ally of Russia. The country, governed autocratically by President Alexander Lukashenko, is not directly involved in the war in neighboring Ukraine, but allows Russian troops to use its territory for that purpose. In addition, the two allies have established a joint military unit in Belarus and conducted numerous exercises together.

Several Russian military aircraft and aerial reconnaissance aircraft are stationed in Belarus. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly expressed fears that Belarus could enter the war on the Russian side or that Russia could open a new front from Belarusian territory.
