“Part of the war” – Wagenknecht shocked by rape allegation

Date:

Left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht, who has been repeatedly criticized for her controversial statements about Russia’s offensive war in Ukraine, aroused displeasure on Monday with an explosive statement. In particular, she commented on the rape of Ukrainian women by Russian soldiers – causing huge controversy. Thousands of comments were received on social networks on Tuesday.

The ARD program “Hart aber fair” depicted the fate of a raped Ukrainian woman on Monday evening. Wagenknecht then, in a war of words with Green politician Katrin Göring-Eckardt, said such attacks were “terrible and abominable” and added: “It is part of war, and it is not just so in this war. Wars are always associated with war crimes.’ Goering-Eckardt strongly disagreed.

Wagenknecht sees crimes on both sides
Wagenknecht continued: “The UN Commissioner for Human Rights has repeatedly pointed out, including in this war: war crimes are committed by both sides and if you want to end them, (…) if you want to end them make it, then you have to end this war.” Moderator Louis Klamroth refuted United Nations statements that there was no evidence of rape by Ukrainian soldiers and that rape was part of Russia’s war strategy.

“Dare to accuse us of such a thing”
Wagenknecht then said: “That is not true.” The UN clearly said that war crimes happened in every war. Klamroth responded by pointing out that it was rape. Wagenknecht led rapes in Donbass by the Ukrainian Azov battalion. The war of words ended without result, but Wagenknecht said at the end: “I think it’s just an insinuation to say we don’t care. I just think it’s rude to accuse us of something like that.”

The prominent left-wing politician has been in the spotlight again for weeks and is the subject of discussion within the left, but also beyond. She had written a “Manifesto for Peace” with women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer and called for a rally at the Brandenburg Gate. Wagenknecht and Schwarzer called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to “stop the escalation of arms shipments” and called for a ceasefire and peace negotiations. Critics had accused them of being “naive”.

AfD-Höcke: “Come to us”
In the course of the debate, a new split arose on the left: the left-wing leadership distanced itself from Wagenknecht’s approach because, in its opinion, it did not distinguish itself clearly enough from the right. Numerous AfD members were also present at Saturday’s demonstration, the AfD said. The prominent AfD politician Björn Höcke then even offered Wagenknecht to join the party: “Come to us”, he advised the controversial politician to join the party.
